Brussels (Belgium), Wednesday, December 11, 2024 (Lasvocesdelpueblo).- To the attention of President Metsola; Dear President Metsola, From the VOX delegation in the European Parliament, we would like to convey to you our deep concern about a serious inconsistency that affects the credibility of this institution in its defense of freedom and human rights.
Recently, this Parliament awarded the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to María Corina Machado, in recognition of her tireless struggle against the tyranny of Nicolás Maduro and in defense of freedom in Venezuela. However, with great astonishment, we have witnessed how the FEMM Commission, chaired by the socialist Lina Gálvez, invited José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a well-known collaborator and defender of the narco-communist regime, to participate in the Gender and Equality Week.
The contradiction is untenable: how can this Chamber honor a brave opponent of the regime while giving voice and visibility to those who, with their complicity, have whitewashed the crimes and repression of that same tyranny?
It is an insult not only to María Corina Machado, but also to all the victims of the Chavista regime. To allow someone like Rodriguez Zapatero to occupy a space in this Parliament, dedicated to promoting equality and fundamental rights, is a disregard for the principles we claim to defend.
I urge you, as the highest representative of this institution, to take steps to ensure that the European Parliament is not complicit, directly or indirectly, with those who legitimize or collaborate with dictatorships. Our responsibility is clear: to always be on the side of freedom, of the victims and of those who fight against the largest communist regime that currently exists in Latin America.
We are waiting for your explanations and for the necessary actions to be taken to avoid the repetition of this serious inconsistency.
Yours sincerely,
Head of the VOX Delegation
European Parliament
