Benjamin Earl Nelson (Henderson, Carolina del Norte, 28 de septiembre de 1938 – 30 de abril de 2015), más conocido como Ben E. King, fue un cantante estadounidense de soul y pop. Especialmente famoso en los años sesenta, era el intérprete de la versión más conocida de «Stand by Me» (de la que era coautor con los productores Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller), un éxito en los Estados Unidos en 1961 y 1986, y en el Reino Unido en 1987.
según fuentes de Wikipedia, tras trasladarse muy niño a Harlem, sus primeros pasos artísticos se produjeron a finales de los años cincuenta. En 1958, formó un grupo de doo wop llamado The Five Crowns. A finales de año, The Drifters se deshicieron de varios de sus miembros y los reemplazaron con los del grupo de Nelson, que había trabajado en ocasiones con The Drifters. Nelson coescribió el primer éxito para el nuevo grupo, «There Goes My Baby» (1959).
Fue su cantante principal, usando para ello su nombre de pila, en «Save the Last Dance for Me», una canción escrita por Doc Pomus y Mort Shuman, «Dance With Me», «This Magic Moment», «I Count the Tears» y «Lonely Winds». Ben E. King solo grabó diez canciones con los Drifters, incluyendo un no sencillo titulado «Temptation».
«Stand by me» es una canción en inglés de 1961 interpretada por Ben E. King y compuesta por él mismo y por Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller, adaptada, con un sonido más contemporáneo, a partir de un tema gospel de 1955, interpretada por The Staples Singers. Aunque desde su publicación ha sido interpretada por numerosos músicos, la versión original sigue siendo una de las más populares.
Durante la composición del tema, Ben E. King no tenía intención de grabarla, tal y como declaró en una entrevista para el documental Historia del Rock ‘n’ Roll. King había escrito el tema para The Drifters, quienes decidieron no grabarla. No fue sino hasta después de las sesiones de grabación de «Spanish Harlem» cuando, al pedirle el productor musical nuevo material, King tocó Stand By Me en el piano. El productor dio el visto bueno al ensayo y llamó a músicos de sesión para grabar el tema.
Mike Stoller lo recuerda así: «Recuerdo que llegué a la oficina, y Jerry y Ben estaban trabajando en la letra de una nueva canción. Ben tenía el inicio de una melodía. La terminó y perfeccionó, trabajó en las armonías y le añadió un bajo que se convirtió en la firma de la canción». Stand By Me ha entrado en los diez primeros puestos de las listas de Billboard en dos ocasiones: tras su publicación como sencillo en 1961 y en 1986, cuando coincidió con la publicación del tema en la película Cuenta conmigo y con el uso del tema para un anuncio de Levi Jeans.
Stand by Me ha sido catalogada en el puesto 121 de la lista de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos, elaborada por la revista musical Rolling Stone. BMI nombró el tema como el cuarto tema más interpretado durante el siglo XX, con más de siete millones de interpretaciones.
